in writing resume, make sure you make it as simple and concise as possible.

this was my resume when i was applying for an intern position

i had 2 phone/chat interviews but none of them were really interested.

then i realized, there was a lot happening in this resume

first, obviously colors,

recruiters tend to pick candidates who show actions than designs meaning 'just show me your work, you don't need to beat around the bush'

sure more colors more fun, but recruiters are not ui/ux designers so they don't really care.

just put yourself in recruiter's shoes, you graduated HR or something related to that. no tech background. do you think you would appreciate something like this? most likely not right?

"but you are applying for frontend position right? having an exceptional resume design can help you stand out"

this was also what thought, but trust me it just doesn't work

i remember being inspired by this Emily Vu Spotify Themed Resume and expecting the same result. but what ended up happening was the opposite. (dang! good old days lol)

what i learned? "unique designs are not applicable with everything. don't reinvent the wheel unless you really have to"

After learning my lessons, I came up with something like this.

what was changed:
  1. Colors: No other colors than the actual text and hyperlinks. remember, HRs look at the content not the design
  2. Icons: Ditched the colorful icons, recruiters most don't know what they are so they are nonsense. they are just wasting a lot of spaces
  3. Skills Percentage: First, icons/non-ascii texts are big waste of space. Second, the percentage itself. tech is very big, and being a full stack developer means you need to know a lot of things and 4.5 stars doesn't make any sense. What is the .5 star you don't know?
  4. Section Flow: There is no problem with having 2 colum, but for me having one is more neat. someone reading this will just go from top to bottom. very simple.
  5. Display Picture: Companies don't really care, and if they do, they can just go to your linkedin profile.
